Life is Picking Up Pace, Which Gives Us Opportunity For Pause
With the return of AFL football to both Geelong and Melbourne, the Australian Grand Prix on the weekend and school holidays beginning, it feels like there is some more energy returning to our towns and cities after a couple of years with many days in lockdown.

Although we have to remain vigilant to COVID throughout Winter, we are able to make plans with more assurance than in recent times. With this extra freedom comes the opportunity to reflect on exactly how we want to spend our leisure time without restrictions and with more possibilities of what we can do.

Each of us will have our own speed that we return to a pace of life more similar to pre-pandemic levels, but we can all take the opportunity to reflect on what we have learnt from the last few years. Many people will have gained a clearer sense of the things that make them happy and the activities they want to prioritise going forward. This may include more regular exercise, more catchups with friends and family, more time travelling, or more time reading, painting, or doing another activity that we enjoyed having extra time for in lockdown.

As we look ahead to the possibilities for what we can do for the rest of the year and beyond, it is likely that we will have a greater appreciation for the activites that we weren't able to do during lockdown. This gives us an opportunity to further prioritise those activitities now that we have a bit more freedom.

We are currently only able to consider new clients who have some flexibility with days and times they can attend. After 4pm appointments are fully booked. We are asking that potential new clients are fully vaccinated and able to come on a range of days and times.

My Manifesto

We would also like to make note of a recently launched service called My Manifesto, which was created by Justin Robinson and Sue Wong. Justin has recently launched the program after a stellar career with the Positive Education Institute in Geelong.  Sue has an extensive career in education and coaching. The program involves coaching and guides users through the creation of their own personal manifesto, which provides a range of mental health benefits, including providing a clearer sense of purpose and meaning in one's own life.

Chris was invited as guest speaker at the March 30th zoom launch to talk about “Living an Authentic Life” (link to audio below).

The practice opinion pieces for the Geelong Advertiser continue on Mondays monthly.

The most recent article was:

An article about social media and screen time and how it can disrupt our attention and focus, along with some tips on how to reduce distraction.

Chris was recently interviewed for an article in the Sydney Morning Herald about complaining.

Against the backdrop of some of the many serious challenges people have faced over the past couple of years and elsewhere in the world currently, it can feel overly sensitive to complain about our every day issues or "first world problems." However, if it is done in a positive way and does not contribute to a cycle of negativity, complaining to ourselves can be a form of self-compassion. Click here to read the article

The practice podcast, Psych Spiels and Silver Linings has continued to release weekly episodes.

Our most recent episode, Building Better Habits (and Overcoming Bad Ones), was with clinical and forensic psychologist David Cherry, who has over 40 years experiencing working with adults, adolescents children and families. David gave us lots of actionable tips and strategies for how we can influence our behaviour to build better habits.

The second to last episode, Fortifying Our Focus in the Age of Distraction, was about all of the distractions that appear in modern life and how they can affect our ability to focus. These include things like social media and other digital technologies, which can affect our ability to concentrate for lengthy periods of time. This episode served as a good introduction for the interview with David Cherry, as we were able to discuss some of the problems that David provided solutions for.

You can listen to the podcast on your favourite podcast player or at psychspiels.com.au

If you've enjoyed the podcast, we would really appreciate if it you could rate and review the podcast as this will extend to reach to others who may benefit.

As well as keeping you up to date on all the latest news in the practice we will also be including some resources that you will hopefully find helpful. They include:

  • A meaningful quote
  • A framework from psychology that you may find useful
  • A helpful article
  • A good podcast
  • An interesting youtube video

In a recent podcast interview with David Cherry, he mentioned a book from Dr Catherine Price called The Power of Fun: How to Feel Alive Again. Within her book, Dr Price talks about the three characteristics of fun. Looking at these elements allows us to engineer more fun.

According to Dr Price, fun has three characteristics: engagement and connection with others, playfulness, and experiencing a sense of flow (being engaged and present in the moment, undistracted by thoughts about the future or the past.)

Dr Price encourages us to reflect on the times that we had the most fun and prioritise making space for those activities. She also encourages us to reflect on our daily lives and to recognise some things that are fun that we may otherwise ignore. This may include some work tasks or elements of routine that we do with our family or those we live with.
